Dental Sealants at StarBrite Dental in Rockville, MD

In our dedication to provide excellent care for every patient, we often recommend dental sealants for kids. If you’re not familiar with sealants, this is a process of applying a clear protective coating to the chewing surface of a child’s teeth. During a preventative dental visit, our dentist will coat the child’s molars with this sealant material and then harden it quickly. This durable coating can last as long as several years, providing protection to the enamel surface of the teeth the whole time.

The reason dental sealants for kids are such a good idea is that the molars have deep grooves in which plaque easily accumulates. This coating stands between bacteria and the enamel surface, keeping tooth decay from getting started.

When Should Dental Sealants for Kids Be Applied?

We normally recommend that sealants be applied as soon as molars begin to come in, which is usually around twelve years of age. In some cases, we might recommend application of sealants to baby teeth to prevent cavities, especially if a younger child is developing cavities in their baby teeth.

When we talk to parents about applying sealants, we want to make sure we are answering all their questions. We want every patient or parent of a child patient to understand the treatment we are recommending. In that way, each patient can be a participant in the achievement of excellent dental health. If we recommend this treatment for your child, please let any staff member or dentist know about your concerns or questions.

The Best Preventative Care for Your Long-Term Dental Health

At StarBrite Dental, we constantly update our knowledge of the latest dental technology. This includes preventative technology that can help you or your children maintain perfect smiles. The technical excellence of our dental care is very important to us. We want you to always be able to count on our offering state-of-the-art procedures every time you or your children are treated in our Rockville, MD office.

The application of dental sealants is one of those procedures that we feel offers the best preventative care for your child. School-aged children who do not receive these sealants have nearly three times as much tooth decay as children who receive them. That makes them an excellent investment in a child’s healthy teeth.

In a few cases, we may recommend these sealants for adults as well.

The Dental Sealant Procedure

Before we begin this procedure, we make sure that both the patient and their parents understand the procedure and are comfortable with the steps that will be taken in their application. At StarBrite Dental, each dentist and administrative staff feels the same way about our patients—we are truly concerned about their comfort and well-being! That means ensuring they are as relaxed as possible about any upcoming procedure.

The first step of the procedure is thoroughly cleaning the surfaces of the teeth to be sealed, followed by drying them. A mild acid solution is applied to the chewing surface of these teeth to make them microscopically rougher. This is so the sealant solution will bond tightly to the tooth.

The sealant material is then painted onto the chewing surface of each tooth. A bright light cures this material, so it hardens in seconds.

The child may be able to feel this sealant for the first few days. After that, they will simply benefit from its protections. Every time your child comes to see us after that, we will examine the sealants to ensure that they’re in good condition and don’t need replacing.
