The Dental Sealant Procedure
Before we begin this procedure, we make sure that both the patient and their parents understand the procedure and are comfortable with the steps that will be taken in their application. The first step of the procedure is thoroughly cleaning the surfaces of the teeth to be sealed, followed by drying them. A mild acid solution is applied to the chewing surface of these teeth to make them microscopically rougher. This is so the sealant solution will bond tightly to the tooth.
The sealant material is then painted onto the chewing surface of each tooth. A bright light cures this material, so it hardens in seconds.
The child may be able to feel this sealant for the first few days. After that, they will simply benefit from its protections. Every time your child comes to see us after that, we will examine the sealants to ensure that they’re in good condition and don’t need replacing.
