Facial Expressions: The Key to a Person's Personality

If you really stop to think about it, what are the two things people immediately notice the first time they meet you?

Your eyes and your smile.

Instinctively, the first thing we see when we meet someone is the expression on their face. This tells more about a person than almost anything else -including their body language, their clothing or the rest of their body. It's a fundamental and instinctive way of relating to others. Are their eyes bright and friendly? Big smile? We feel welcomed and connect.

Because people look to others' expressions for information so often, they tend to notice these areas more than others. Think about it: the most memorable thing about most people is their eyes, their smile and their face.

This is why cosmetic dentistry is important. If people are going to spend so much time looking at your smile, it's important to put your best foot forward. It's important to feel confident and unworried about what they're thinking. It's important to be able to be able to be there comfortably, happy that you're giving the first impression you want.

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is any type of dental work that improves the appearance of your teeth, rather than just addressing their function. In other words, it's the type of dentistry that makes your mouth LOOK better.

Everyone has an idea of how they'd like their smile to look. Probably they'd prefer straight white teeth that looked like they were out of a magazine. Who wouldn't? A beautiful smile is one of the first things we all notice.

However, in the real world it just doesn't come that easy. Stains, crooked teeth, gaps and chips are part of life. Everyone's teeth don't grow in exactly how they'd like. Life and the passing of time also takes a toll with discoloration and the like.

Cosmetic dentistry fixes this. Easily. Simply. How?

Cosmetic Dental Procedures

The following are some of the different types of cosmetic dental procedures available:

Whitening
Whitening is one of the easiest ways to improve your smile. If you have stained or discolored teeth, simple whitening procedures can totally change their appearance, turning a dingy yellow into a bright white.

Veneers
Sometimes the best way to address a misshapen or discolored tooth is with a veneer. Veneers are extremely thin, custom-made shells that cover the surface of a tooth to change its color, length, size or shape. Veneers are a great way to give someone a "movie star smile."

Bonding
If you have chipped, cracked or misshapen teeth, this can be solved by "bonding." We apply a putty-like material which is hardened by a special ultraviolet light. It's then shaped, trimmed and polished to the exact look you want. Bonding can totally change the look of a tooth.

Crowns
A dental crown is like a cap that replaces a decayed tooth above your gum line. Often needed for other reasons such as keeping a cracked or weakened tooth from breaking, crowns are used cosmetically to cover misshapen or severely discolored teeth.

Implants
An implant is like a replacement tooth. Where a tooth is missing or had to be pulled, an implant is the solution. With titanium tooth roots, implants are inserted directly into the bone socket of the missing tooth. The jawbone grows around the implant, providing a foundation for an entirely new replacement tooth.

Orthodontics and Invisalign
"Orthodontics" is the branch of dentistry that deals with correcting the position of crooked teeth. Long ago the solution was simply getting braces, which many people didn't want to do. However, now there is another option-invisible aligners such as Invisalign. These allow a person to straighten their teeth in the least obtrusive way possible. In the end, the goal is rows of pearly whites which are straight and look how you want them to.
