Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

Because of the expert specialists on the staff of StarBrite Dental, we can offer our patients a wide variety of dental treatments. For procedures like cosmetic periodontal surgery, we have an experienced periodontist along with an oral surgeon. It’s important to us to be able to provide complete care for our patients in an environment they feel comfortable in.

With every patient we treat, we listen carefully to the goals of that patient. We then use our skills and our experience to prepare a treatment plan to enable that patient to achieve their goals for both health and appearance. We’ll then go over our recommendations with the patient and make sure they understand each step.

Three purposes can be achieved through cosmetic periodontal surgery and we provide all three surgeries in our office.

Crown Lengthening

A beautiful smile may be concealed by gums that cover up too much of the teeth. As a result, a patient may seem to have very short teeth or teeth could appear to be different lengths on different sides of their smile. Crown lengthening surgery, also called gum contouring, gum reshaping or gum sculpting, is the solution.

Our first step is always a careful consultation with our patient to fully understand their goals. Next is a thorough examination of the health of both teeth and gums. We can then plan the patient’s crown lengthening. Using detailed imaging to ensure a good result, our oral surgeon plans the exact gum contouring that will get them the result they want.

The day of the surgery, there will be no shortcuts to save time or money. Our first concerns are always the health and comfort of the patient. We ensure the patient is as comfortable as possible as we reshape gums to expose more of the teeth.

After the surgery, our attentive dentists and staff will follow up to ensure an excellent result.

Gum Grafting

Gum grafting may be needed when gum recession causes the teeth to look too long. Teeth may become sensitive to cold, heat or sweets because the roots are exposed. It’s important to restore the proper length of the gums to prevent damage to the teeth.

Whenever we make a recommendation for gum grafting surgery, we incorporate an education for the patient on why this problem has occurred, what treatment and recovery will be like and how further problems can be avoided in the future. Education is very important to us at StarBrite Dental. We want our patients to be full participants in the restoration and maintenance of their health.

Gum grafting consists of placing grafts of gum tissue in the areas where gums have receded. The grafts are obtained from other areas of the mouth. This tissue is carefully sutured into place over the exposed roots. As this graft heals, the gums take on a more normal shape and the teeth are protected from sensitivity and the threat of decay.

Ridge Augmentation

When a person is missing a tooth for a long time, their body breaks down bone in that area. The gums can appear to have a “dent” in them. This dent may cause replacement teeth to appear too long or expose the tops of bridges or dental implants. The solution is to restore the bone in this area.

Whenever we address a problem suffered by a patient, we will always propose the solution that will fully resolve this problem. Half-way measures that simply put the problem on hold for a while are never acceptable because we do not consider this high quality care.

Our ridge augmentation plan will be specifically designed to resolve the problems of this individual patient. With a focus on excellent results, we then complete ridge augmentation surgery with precise placement of bone graft material. A dental implant may follow.
