What Is a Gum Graft?

Gum graft

When gum grafting surgery is needed, your dentist will show you areas in your smile where your gums have pulled away from your teeth. The teeth in this area will look longer than other teeth, and even the root may now be exposed. If gum recession is not corrected, the affected teeth could become loose and may eventually be lost.

Our expert surgeon begins a gum grafting procedure by obtaining healthy tissue from elsewhere in your mouth. In most cases, this is accomplished by using tissue from under the membrane that covers the roof of your mouth.

Using a single incision, our surgeon expertly removes the tissue and closes the incision with stitches. The healthy tissue will then be placed over the areas of gum recession using a procedure called connective tissue graft and secured in place with stitches. Our surgeon’s skill causes minimal trauma in both areas.

As the gum grafting site heals, the roots of your teeth will be protected from trauma or decay and you will be protected from the pain and sensitivity that normally results from gum recession. When healing is complete, you will see that your gum line once again looks normal.

StarBrite Dental seeks out the most highly qualified and dedicated practitioners to provide gum grafting surgery. Our skilled practitioners take great care to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during your gum grafting procedure and as you are healing.

What Causes Gum Recession?

Because patient education is a guiding principle at StarBrite Dental, let’s take a quick look at what causes recession, so you can avoid the need for gum grafts in the future. The primary reason gum recession occurs is periodontal disease. This problem is very widespread, resulting from improper home hygiene and infrequent or incomplete professional cleanings.

As periodontal disease is left untreated, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating empty pockets in which bacteria thrive. Gradually, these pockets of bacterial infection cause the gums to draw further away from the teeth, leaving the roots of the teeth exposed.

There are several other contributing factors to receding gums, including use of tobacco, teeth grinding and a poorly aligned bite. Tobacco use increases the likelihood of sticky plaque on the teeth, which promotes gum disease. Teeth grinding and a poor bite place extra stresses on some teeth, which can cause the gums in those areas to recede. Orthodontic treatment may also sometimes result in gum recession. Aggressive tooth brushing may contribute to receding gums.

As soon as patients begin receiving care from StarBrite Dental practitioners, we begin to educate them on the vital importance of preventative care. With a good at-home regimen and regular visits to our thorough hygienists, you have your best chance of avoiding the need for serious dental treatment.

Why Is Gum Grafting Needed?

custom-fit mouthguard for teeth grinding

In keeping with StarBrite Dental’s rigorous technical standards, we recommend gum grafting when teeth have suffered root exposure. The roots of teeth are not designed to be exposed and are more sensitive than the parts of the teeth covered with hard enamel.

Before one of our caring dentists educated you on your need for a gum grafting procedure, you may have noticed that you experienced pain while brushing or flossing. Or maybe some areas of your smile became sensitive to sweets, heat or cold. These are early signs of gum recession.

If you notice these problems, call us. A quick examination with one of our experts will reveal the cause and can help us begin treatment to avoid more serious problems. We will never offer a partial solution for a problem—providing the highest quality of care means solving a dental problem completely with the right dental technology.

If recession is untreated, these further problems may develop:

  • Pain near the gum line
  • Bone loss
  • Loose teeth
  • Decay developing on the roots

Unfortunately, gum tissue that has already receded will not grow back. Gum grafting surgery with one of our experienced specialists can prevent these more serious problems.
