Pulpotomy at StarBrite Dental

A pulpotomy is a treatment for a tooth that has suffered deep decay that penetrates the pulp of the tooth. Because the experts at StarBrite Dental know how important it is to get immediate care for a painful tooth, we offer emergency pulpotomies to relieve this pain.

A pulpotomy can be a relatively quick procedure to provide pain relief on an emergency basis. At the end of this procedure, we can send our patient home, often with a prescription for antibiotics to treat any infection present. They will be out of pain and we can schedule further treatment at their convenience.

Why Is a Dental Pulpotomy Needed?

When a tooth is healthy, the tough enamel and root of a tooth keep all bacteria from invading the soft, vital pulp of the tooth. If the enamel is seriously damaged by a deep cavity, bacteria can invade the pulp and cause an infection. An abscess often forms at the base of the tooth. If this happens, the result is usually severe pain that must be addressed immediately.

Treating an infected tooth with a dental pulpotomy requires cleaning out the top portion of the soft pulp of the tooth and relieving the pressure created by the abscess at the root. At StarBrite Dental, we care for many of our neighbors in the Rockville, Maryland area to help relieve their pain immediately, even nights and weekends. We then schedule them for root canal therapy so they can preserve this tooth, often for the rest of their lives.

In some offices, this procedure may be referred to as a pulpectomy. No matter what this pulp treatment is called, we offer this care and every treatment with an insistence on superb quality. We offer this pulp therapy only for adult permanent teeth.

Dental Pulpotomy Procedure

As our dentists begin this pulp therapy, their initial focus is on ensuring the comfort of each patient. Education is also of great importance in our practice, so we want each patient to understand the procedure they will experience. Once we have explained what will happen during this procedure, we will begin the pulpotomy.

The pulp therapy procedure begins with the tooth and the area around it being fully numbed. The top of the tooth is opened up and the soft pulp in the upper part of the tooth is cleaned out. Dental instruments in the careful and skilled hands of our dentists then create an open channel to the end of the tooth that will allow the abscess at the root to drain. This will relieve the pressure inside the tooth that causes the unbearable pain suffered by many people seeking this treatment. Because of these infections, we send many of them home with prescriptions for antibiotics.

To complete their treatment, we schedule each patient to come back for complete root canal therapy, followed by a buildup and post and then a crown. Buildup and post refer to our procedures to prepare the tooth for a crown. These preparations include restoring the tooth’s shape (the buildup) with composite resin dental material while stabilizing the buildup and crown with a small post fitted into the tooth. Once this is done, a crown will be placed over the tooth. Even a badly damaged tooth can be preserved with this procedure.
