Gum Pocket Reduction Surgery

Even when gum disease has reached an advanced stage, it is possible to treat this problem so that gum and tooth health are protected. If gum disease has caused deep pockets to develop around some of the teeth, pocket reduction surgery may be called for to prevent further advancement of the disease.

Why Deep Pockets Need Treatment

Loose pockets may form around teeth if plaque and tartar are allowed to remain on the teeth for long periods. The bacteria that cause these problems can invade the small spaces between the gums and the teeth and make these spaces larger. Gradually, the gums draw away from the teeth and there is more room for bacteria to form colonies.

Whenever you are treated by one of the skilled and highly trained dentists at StarBrite Dental, we will always check for any signs that deep pockets are forming. We know that these pockets are destructive of both bone and gum tissue. To prevent the development of advanced periodontal disease, we will recommend early treatment.

If we see a patient that has already developed these deep pockets, then our best judgment for the treatment that will save gum tissue and preserve healthy bone may be
gum flap surgery and osseous surgery (bone surgery). This will be needed when the pockets have become too deep to clean during a scaling and root planing procedure in our office.

Every time we recommend a treatment, we have one standard: excellence. We will always recommend a course of treatment that will fully address and resolve a dental problem. This is how we protect your teeth so you can retain them for your whole life.

“Very nice, professional, calming and knowledgeable. I appreciate everything Dr. Seifi and her staff have done for me. The first day I came in, she was able to squeeze me into her schedule to start my urgently needed dental work.
Highly recommended.”

Pocket Depth Reduction

Some dentists use the name gum flap surgery for this procedure. Whatever name is used, the goal of this surgery is to reduce the depth of the pockets. The first step is to make an incision that loosens the gum tissue from the teeth and supporting bone. The gum tissue is then lifted away from the teeth. This gives your skilled dentist access to all of the enamel of your teeth and the bone forming the roots.

The next step is cleaning away any tartar that could not be reached with a scaling procedure and smoothing the bone of the roots. With this
osseous (bone) surgery, we eliminate any little gaps that bacteria could take residence in. This cleaning process serves for eliminating bacteria colonies that exist at the moment as well.

The gum is then stitched back in place and an antibiotic material is applied. A clay-like dressing protects the healing gums for the next week or so.

When the gums heal, the gum line will be higher than before but the pockets will be much smaller. As the patient brushes and flosses their teeth after healing is complete, they will be able to reach the plaque forming on their teeth and remove it.

If you receive this type of surgery, you will need to take gentle care of your gum tissue for the first week or so. To ensure a top quality result of our treatment, we will want to examine your gums shortly after the surgery so we can make sure they are healing well. Your well-being and comfort are our top concerns.
