Crown Lengthening To Reshape Gum Line

Some of our patients have perfectly beautiful smiles that simply have too much gum tissue covering their teeth. The result is that their teeth look too small and short. This problem can cause some people to hide their smiles or refuse to smile at all.

Correction of a gummy smile is a simple procedure that our expert dentists perform all the time to excellent results. The procedure for correcting a gummy smile is called
crown lengthening.

This procedure consists of removing excess gum tissue so more of the teeth are exposed. Crown lengthening involves use of a laser or conventional surgery methods.

"Very nice, professional, calming and knowledgeable. I appreciate everything Dr. Seifi and her staff have done for me. The first day I came in, she was able to squeeze me into her schedule to start my urgently needed dental work.
Highly recommended."

The Procedure for Correcting a Gummy Smile

Crown lengthening procedures start with careful planning by our highly trained dentists so they can be sure of getting the best result. They will determine if only gum tissue must be removed or if any bone must also be contoured. The dual concerns of our oral surgeon are your comfort and your excellent results.

Before the surgery, the patient will be fully educated on what to expect from the procedure and the healing time afterwards. As the procedure starts, the gums to be treated will be fully numbed. Then we can begin to reshape the gums and any bone structure needed to provide our patient with the perfect smile.

A Second Purpose for Crown Lengthening

In our insistence on the highest quality of care for our patients, we may recommend crown lengthening for a patient who has a natural tooth that fractured under the gum line or who needs a crown placed on a broken tooth. In these cases, the height of the gum tissue may need to be reduced.

In the case of a fracture under the gum line, we need to reshape the gum to be able to reach the fracture. To place a crown on a broken tooth, we may need to reduce the height of the gum to have enough tooth available to secure a crown. This procedure may also be needed to correct the gum line around existing dental crowns.

In each case, we ensure that the treatment we offer provides a complete solution for the patient’s problem. A half-measure to cover up the problem is never the right solution for a StarBrite Dental patient. We insist on excellent quality and results every time we provide treatment.

After the Procedure

You will need to give your gums time to heal after this surgery. For the first few days, your gums will be sore and you will need to eat soft foods. We will give you instructions on what types of pain relievers you can take as needed, and the right way to keep your mouth clean. You may want to apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and pain.

As your gums heal, they will shrink and take on their final shape. We can then schedule you for any other treatment needed, such as placement of a crown.

Our staff and dentists are fully available to you if you have any concerns or feel like your gums are painful for too long. We treat every patient as if they were members of our own family so we want you to reach out with any concerns.
