Expert Sinus Lifts and Bone Grafts in Rockville, MD

A sinus lift is a procedure that enables the patients of StarBrite Dental to receive dental implants in the upper jaw, even if there has been bone loss or weakening in that jaw. With a precise sinus lift procedure, it’s finally possible to successfully place dental implants in a maxillary jaw (the upper jaw) that has only a very thin layer of bone between the upper teeth and the maxillary sinus.

We know that many of our patients prefer dental implants over any other method of tooth replacement. Therefore, skillfully providing sinus lifts and bone grafts to enable the placement of dental implants is an important part of giving our patients the very best possible results

Why Sinus Lifts Are Needed

Above the upper teeth, there is a thin layer of bone separating the roots of the teeth from the maxillary sinuses, which are air-filled pockets that lie right behind your cheeks. When that layer of bone is strong and undamaged, it can support your upper teeth easily. If a tooth has been missing for a long time, the bone in the area deteriorates and thins because it lacks the stimulation of biting and chewing. Infection, gum disease and other problems can also cause this bone to become thinner, softer or weaker.

If a dental implant is needed in the upper jaw, particularly for replacement of one of the back teeth, the jaw bone may need to be thickened before placement. That’s to prevent the implant from piercing the sinus membrane that covers the floor of the maxillary sinus. The procedure to thicken this bone is called a sinus augmentation or a sinus lift.

Who May Need a Sinus Lift

Patients with the following situations can usually successfully receive dental implants in the upper jaw if sinus lifts or sinus augmentations are done first:

  • The maxillary bone is too soft.
  • Too much bone mass has been lost due to long-term missing teeth.
  • The bone is not dense enough.
  • Trauma has thinned or damaged the bone in the area.
  • Gum disease has caused bone loss.
  • Tooth decay or infection has required bone to be removed.

Sinus lifts are most often needed for the rear teeth. These teeth are subjected to intense pressures as one chews, meaning that the bone supporting these teeth needs to be particularly strong, dense and thick. For a dental implant to be successful, bone that has thinned must be strengthened.

Careful Evaluation Before Beginning a Sinus Lift

The first step in successfully placing dental implants in the upper jaw is a precise evaluation by one of StarBrite Dental’s experts. We know the importance of understanding the exact bone formation and sinus structure of any patient for whom a sinus lift procedure is recommended. Careful 3D imaging is a must. This imaging plus a visual examination and complete medical history for each patient gives our dentists the information they need to provide a superior quality of care, every time.

With these precise preliminaries complete, our dentists can provide the most successful and satisfactory results for our patients, from sinus lift through dental implant placement and final restoration.

How a Sinus Lift is Done

A sinus lift is simply a specialized type of bone graft specifically addressing the bone in the maxillary (upper) jaw. Here are the steps that are taken to complete a sinus augmentation procedure:

  1. Precise imagining and examination of maxillary bone formation and sinus walls.
  2. Careful planning of the perfect placement for the dental implant.
  3. Accessing the bone of the maxillary jaw through an incision in the gum.
  4. Making a small opening in the bone to access the maxillary sinus.
  5. Lifting the sinus membrane on the sinus floor.
  6. Filling the open area with bone graft material so that the sinus membrane is raised.
  7. Closing the surgical area.
  8. Permitting the bone graft material to stimulate bone formation.
  9. Monitoring bone growth until it is strong enough for dental implant placement.
  10. Placing the implant in the strengthened bone.

Bone Grafts for Thicker, Stronger Bone

A bone graft involves the placement of bone graft material in an area that needs bone regeneration. Bone graft material consists of tiny fragments of bone or bone-like material that will initiate increased bone growth by the body. These fragments can be made from the patient’s own bone taken from another part of the body, sanitized animal bone or from synthetic, bio-compatible materials.

Bone grafts can be placed anywhere in the upper or lower jaws to assist bone regeneration. They can also be used to widen the bony ridges under the gums so that they will better support dentures. Bone grafting material may also be placed in a socket after a tooth is extracted to ensure solid bone regeneration in the area.

In most cases, bone grafting must be allowed to heal fully before the dental implant is placed. In this situation, our caring experts will closely monitor a patient’s healing so that the dental implant placement can be scheduled as soon as possible. Our priorities are a completely successful dental implant that lasts for the rest of the patient’s life and a positive surgical experience from start to finish.

After healing has been confirmed, the usual dental implant procedure will take place:

  1. The bone of the jaw will be accessed through a small incision in the gum.
  2. A narrow opening in the bone will be created and the dental implant will be placed.
  3. The gum will then be closed.
  4. The implant will be given time to bond with the jaw bone.
  5. When this healing is complete, a clean, white porcelain crown will be attached to the implant.

Now, our patient has the most satisfactory and permanent replacement for their missing tooth.

A dental implant may occasionally be placed at the same time that a sinus lift is done, meaning that a patient only experiences one surgical procedure. This is possible when the bone has not thinned excessively.
