What’s Your Dental IQ?

Keep reading this blog post to learn about your Dental IQ, and the importance of oral health education.

Knowledge is power.

When we understand something, we can take control of it and make informed decisions. Without understanding, we’re depending on fate or hope. Maybe we’re counting on someone else to make the decision for us. Maybe we’re just closing our eyes and hoping for the best. Either way, we aren’t in the driver’s seat.

This applies to our careers, to our families, to our finances and to our health. It also applies to dentistry. In fact, there’s a word for it in the dental profession. It’s called “Dental IQ.” A patient’s “Dental IQ” is how well they understand their own oral health.

Low “Dental IQ” means a person doesn’t really understand how to care for their teeth and so makes mistakes that can cause problems later. As a result, they can end up neglecting things until it’s almost too late—costing far more money and causing them unnecessary pain.

A high “Dental IQ” means a person not only understands how to take care of their teeth properly, but also understands what treatment they need. They know the difference between good dentistry and bad. They know what to look for. They’re an educated patient. This is crucial.

Why?

Let’s look at an auto mechanic. When you take your car to the shop, you’re bringing it to an expert who can look it over and tell you exactly what the problem is and what needs to be done to correct it.

This sounds simple. However, as we all know, every mechanic isn’t the same as every other. One may say your car needs to be repaired, while another tells you not to worry about it. If you don’t understand it well enough to even know what questions to ask…well, you may be asking for trouble. The same is true of dentistry — you have to be educated.

However, that’s where the comparison ends. If your car goes bad, you can just go out and buy a new one. You’ll have the same teeth for your whole life. Therefore, it’s even more important that you’re properly educated about oral health for both you and your family.

Additionally, “Dental IQ” doesn’t end when you leave the dental office. Your teeth are part of your everyday life and so is Dental IQ. This is one of those “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” things.

Eating right and exercising are a lot easier on yourself than having triple bypass surgery. And living a healthy oral lifestyle is a lot easier than trying to fix it all after you’re in trouble. The choices we make every day have a profound effect on our long-term health. It’s not hard to do the right thing—but you have to know what the right thing is.

At StarBrite Dental , we care. We want the best for our patients. This is why we’re so big on the importance of patient oral health education — increasing Dental IQ.
